Attribution is required for most of our data providers. Example language is provided below, but you are responsible for researching each project to follow their license terms. More details are available on the Data Sources page and at Mapzen rights for the hosted service.

Where to attribute

Attribution needs to "appear in a place that is reasonable to the medium or means you are utilising." Specific examples are given by the OSM Foundation and are generally best practices for giving credit to any source.

OpenStreetMap is a community-driven, editable map of the world. All OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the ODbL, a share-alike license which also requires attribution.

We include OSM-derived water and earth polygons from osmdata.openstreetmap.de at mid- and high-zooms. This data is under the OSM ODbL license.

Natural Earth

Natural Earth is a public domain dataset released as follows:

All versions of Natural Earth raster + vector map data found on this
website are in the public domain. You may use the maps in any manner,
including modifying the content and design, electronic dissemination,
and offset printing. The primary authors, Tom Patterson and Nathaniel
Vaughn Kelso, and all other contributors renounce all financial claim
to the maps and invites you to use them for personal, educational, and
commercial purposes.

No permission is needed to use Natural Earth. Crediting the authors is
unnecessary.

Who's On First

Crediting Who's On First is recommended and linking back to their License is required.

Data from Who's On First. <a href="https://www.whosonfirst.org/docs/licenses/">License</a> and <a href="https://github.com/whosonfirst/whosonfirst-sources/blob/master/sources/README.md">sources</a>.

Who's On First makes use of a number of open data sources, some of whom do require attribution. Neighbourhood sources include: Zetashapes (geometry), Quattroshapes (geometry), and GeoPlanet (names). Please note that original sources may be modified.
